Hi,
trying to be greener and save some money also. I have a wireless router, free from virgin, but my computer is next to internet cable, so really could stop using the router. The router is plung in to the socket for approx 8 hours a day. How much do you think this cost in a day with the rates approx? I am with British Gas and Electricty.
Thank you for your thoughs

Are you sure that you have a separate ADSL modem? Most wireless routers also include the modem. You cannot just connect the ADSL stream from the telephone socket straight into your computer (unless it has an internal ADSL modem - which is different from a dial-up modem).

No idea about power useage but using an ethernet wired connection may be faster or more stable if you don't need the wireless.

Depends on the power the router consumes.

However taking a figure of 10w that will be approx 1 pence a day.

    Although probably not that much.

Looking at around £12-£16 a year having it on 24/7.
So if you do genuinely use it for 12hrs a day then your saving by switching it off when not in use is going to be less than £10 a year.

    Hope this helps

The OP has it on 8 hours.

A BT hub is 8w, on that thread another was 11w and a third 15w

So for 8 hours use those 3 will cost from about 0.8pence a day to 1.5 pence a day. or £3 to £6 a year
