Internet Connection Problems AVG Internet Security

My mate has an Acer Aspire 5715Z running Vista Home Premium. He installed AVG Internet Security & ever since he has not been able to connect to the internet. He has since uninstalled AVG but still same problem.
I tried to connect it to my wireless Netgear DG834GT. I input the IP & DNS manually in the TCP/IP properties & for some reason it is not remembering the gateway address. I have never come accross the problem before.
Any ideas?
