Playa Blanca!

So excited as off to Playa Blanca very soon but wanted to ask a few quick questions if I may please?

1: Where is the best place to buy euros in UK?

2: Planning on taking Nationwide debit card - presumably it can be used to withdraw cash at hole in wall over there? I also have Nationwide credit card with 0 balance but not interest free.

3: Where is the best place to buy duty free perfumes? Just can't bring myself to spend £58 on bottle in Boots! I'm hoping I can find some at a better price but don't know if its best to look over there or in airport.....

Can you tell I haven't been abroad for years?!!! :o

  • I assume this is Playa Blanca Lanzarote
The £ against the Euro is at an all time low so the rate you get now will be pretty poor.
    1. For Euros I usually use American Express office on our High Street. You can often get a slightly better conversion rate for £ notes in the resort.
    2. Nationwide debit cards normally gives you free cash withdrawals from ATMs abroad. The conversion rate on credit cards is normally better than euros in cash but is set at the time of the transaction so if you think the £ is going to continue to fall against the euro then buy euros now.
3.The Canaries have a special tax status within the EC so there are some restrictions on the amount of duty frees you can bring back but perfume is normally comparatively cheap compared to UK or airport duty free shops. We did notice recently though that the airline duty free price on certain items was better than in the resort. Maybe you could have a look at the prices on the plane on the way out and compare those in resort and decide if you are going to buy on the way back.

    Have a great time.

You can withdraw cash over there. Exchange rate is better too.

The strength of the euro has really hit these european resorts and they are so much more expensive than they were.

Playa Blanca is a lovely place though and very relaxing
  • I've booked to go there in February! Im very excited too!! :j x

You won't really need to get euros here, or at least only a very small amount until you find an ATM.

Remember that when you use your NW debit card, if it asks you, get the transaction put on your account in euros. You will lose out if the ATM's bank does the conversion.
  • I would agree with all the others who responded, Playa Blanca is really relaxed and beautiful. I would recommend however hiring a car and getting about on the island as while PB is great, the rest of the island has some great places to explore.
  • Went to Lanzarote in October and loved it. I thought it was rather expensive, but this think this was due to the low Euro.
I stayed in Puerto del Carmen which was nice, but really enjoyed our visits to Playa Blanca.
