Does anyone know where I can buy a steam generator iron for cheap?
I don't really want to pay more than £50 if thats possible!
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

  • Steam generator irons are great. They really do cut your ironing time considerably. I have a Tefal, but I think that would probably be more expensive than you want to pay.

Only advice I can give you is to make sure you get one that you can refill the water tank without turning off the iron. Someone told me they had to turn their iron off and wait for it to cool before adding more water. Considering the amount of water used with a very steamy iron, I think that is really inconvenient.
  • I know, they're really good, I've used my moms one a few times - so much better than standard irons but I can't afford the tefal prices unfortunately.

Wahl could be a good buy. Didn't know they did irons, but their hair cutting thingies are good.

I seem to remember Lidl doing a steam generator for about £50 (N.Ireland) so it probably was cheaper on the mainland. They usually repeat their lines at certain times, so it could be worth watching their website.

If you have a Makro card, they sometimes have some Tefal models well reduced.

    Wow,

You've read my mind, I was just about to post the very same thing. I have a mountain of ironing. :-(

Right, saw this one in Argos, Challenge one at £49.99 and you may get a discount if you check around for codes etc. Don't know what like it is but it has 90gms steam output etc, I've seen other ones at less than than that and a lot dearer, just about double price. So worth a look

    Good luck

    Happy ironing.

    Cheers,

PS, If you have an energy provider that is with Energyplus Argos you will get further discount if you can hold off until you organise the discount vouchers etc. Cheers

Perhaps someone subscribes to Which Magazine and can tell you which ones they recommend? I think they also do a months free trial so that might be worth your time.

I've just come back from Argos with the Challenge one which I mentioned above. Was instore for £49.00. Had a quick check and the only disadvantage I can see to it is that it is a stainless steel soleplate and not one of those Careeza soleplates, or ultraglide. I don't think it would make too much difference or would it? Got a 16 day money back guarantee so I can sit and ponder for a while.

If you go to the main wanna buy it/do it thread and click on search this thread, and enter steam generator it should come up with a couple of other threads all about them.

I know someone was raving on about this one that is available at Amazon, a Tefal one at around £115.

There were a couple at E Directory for around £60, not sure about delivery costs though.

Review of the Challenge Steam Generator from Argos, priced £49.

Very good iron for the price. Gives continuous steam pressure of 90g which is excellent. What would normally take me over an hour with my regular iron took me around 15-20 minutes. I've ironed everything, I've got my armchair back in the lounge for the first time in years. I'm glad I bought it, saved me loads of time. Also, I am constantly at the chiropractor so I don't normally iron for too long with the regular iron, but with this one it's lightweight, just need to run over the clothing once and it's done. It takes around the time it takes a kettle to boil for it to be ready to iron. You'll know when it needs filled, as air goes through the pump and it emits a loud noise, so just pull out the tank and refill, slot back in.

Only disadvantages I see to it are the need to purchase a descaling cartridge every 45 days. It gives a spare in the pack. Yet to find out the price of these so.... Can't see any number for aftersales. The water is soft here so I don't think you'd need a descaling cartridge every 45 days. (45 uses). It's a little noisey during use but it fires through the laundry mountain like you wouldn't believe. 90g steam pressure is all you should need. Seen more expensive steam generators with less steam pressure and also just standard irons which cost more than this. You get a standard 12 month guarantee. For £49 I'm chuffed with the buy, anyone got any ironing???
