Cheap ways to travel
I have just spent the last few hours trying to book the cheapest possible tickets to go from Carlisle to Brighton then from Taunton or Yeovil to Carlisle, I had a major problem because I am going to Brighton for New Years eve then getting picked up by my dad and taken home to Dorset on new years day so couldn't get a return journey.
A tip for anyone travelling long distance over the New Year is that National Express are offering 'fun fares' from over 30 places to London, I saved money by going by train from Carlisle to Newcastle then from Newcastle to London and London to Brighton, last time I travelled to Brighton on the train I had to take this route so I don't mind too much.
The total cost on the coach from Carlisle to Brighton was £39.50 with two changes or £60.55 by train with a Young Persons Rail Card. Where as my way:
Carlisle to Newcastle (wth young persons rail card) £6.75,
Newcastle to London £11 with National Express fun fares
London to Brighton with fun fares £4.00
Total £21.75
Return I had a look at going via the National Express which because of times had to go like this
Taunton to London on National Express fun fares £1
London to Manchester with fun fares £5
Manchester to Carlisle with GNER £9.50
Total £15.50
I had a look on GNER, with my rail card tickets from Yeovil to Carlisle were coming up as £59.75 except for the last train which was £15.20, yes I don't get into Carlisle until 23.45 but I saved money!
From all this I would say when looking for cheap tickets last minute look around at different routes especially if you don't live in a major city and look at early and late trains, also National Express are offering there £9 singles from 5th January 2006 - 31st March 2006, you can book any journey from £9 each way.
