Wrong resolution on booting

Hello,
An irritating problem I noticed when sorting out my mum's PC recently. She's used to it but it got right on my nerves! The symptoms are quite specific so although I don't have exact details of drivers, models numbers etc, I'm hoping it will ring a bell with someone.
PC is a HP Media Centre package from !!!!y Werl. Widescreen HP monitor, Win XP.
When it boots, it briefly shows the desktop at the correct res, then after a few more seconds, drops back to the lowest possible res, where it stays. BUT, if the screensaver kicks in, it corrects the res. Otherwise, the resolution will remain unusable until you change the display settings.
A few things I looked at in passing:
- Both monitor options in the display settings panel defaulted at the low resolution
- The driver appeared up to date and I couldn't find a newer one
I fished a plethora of spyware and rogues off the PC while I was there, but I think the problem dates back almost to when they got the machine.
Any ideas gratefully entertained!

The PC is about 100 miles south of me, so not much I can check. There isn't a techie person on site
I was wishfully thinking someone could tell me 'ah yes, just go into x settings window and tick a box' and I could just ring them up and tell them
But no-one there is going to want to mess with the drivers, so if that's necessary, it will have to wait!
Does anyone know anything about screensavers? Surely it's relevant that it corrects the problem? My TV is broken!

If they have broadband try https://www.logmein.com, free remote control software easy to talk them through setting it up and then you can get the info you need!click here to achieve nothing!0 -
mkbarber, took the words out of my mouth

if all else fails, remote the machine and DIY, I'm surprised a few of us here don't offer that service to other members (I did once and was ignored), though I suppose there could be fairly major trust issues, though the reputation some have here should convey into the real worldUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
Good idea. I've done Remote Assistance with them once before, although last time we tried we couldn't get it to work.
I'll have to get them interested in fixing the problem :rotfl: if anything I'm looking into it partially because it drives me crackers, and whenever I go there I have to fix something on it so I have mess with the resolution every freaking time I restart
