getting a gas meter checked

For a long time now, I've been worried that my gas meter is registering far more gas than I actually use.
I've asked to have it checked, but was told that if they checked it and found it to be accurate, I'd have to pay £70 - which I really can't afford.
Is there any way to get a gas meter checked free - or at least, cheaper?
Thanks.

not really a proper check
but check its zero with nothing on.
Switch all gas appliances off (say at 10 pm then read meter and check it again in the morning before switching them back on. Even better if you can do it do a whole day
If not the same then you have a faulty meter or a leak !
then do thesame with just the CH on for a set time - if its higher than should be its more likely a faulty boiler but could be the meterTANSTAAFL !0 -
you need to contact your gas supplier and they should arrange for it to be checked for you.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0

If it proves to be faulty, you'll get the £70 fee refunded."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100

Nearly everyone thinks theyve got a faulty meter or a leak. truth is its often due to a perception gap and the steadily increasing price of gas. It wont be leakage. For a leak to make a significant impact on your bill, you wouldnt be able to live in the house with it and your house would have blown up.0

you would be surprised how many folk think a smell of gas by a mtr or a gas appliance is normal and do not actually report it until someone else tells them toI am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -
Buy a new G4 meter and have it fitted in series with your existing one

Its cheaper than having a meter officially tested and you can then watch them both going round !0
