Any photoshop or gimp gurus about?

I have dabbled in the past but what I'm trying to do seems to be above me.

I am basically making a photobook on mixbook.com and whilst their options and layouts etc are great they are essentially just simple collages. I would like a few pages with some more advanced collages (for example a pic of someone with the background removed and other photos merged into the background).

Any one know an simple way of doing this?

Essentially you want to feather your selections, so when you paste or add them to new layers, the hand edges fade into the previous background.

Read up on feathering selections and layer masking.
