Dial up probs

Just had a new laptop for Crimbo and set up the new internet connection on it to my I.S.P.
Had both laptops side by side so I knew that I would enter identical details on new one.
When I try to get on net all the right noises happen until the verifying username and password box appears. After about 10 seconds error 718 message appears, "Connection was terminated because the remote p.c. did not respond in a timely manner".
I.S.P. is Virgin, any ideas please ?

Not much help but have you tried searching 'google' for error 718, useful info to be found there.

Are you on the 24seven tarriff??

This is in the virgin help section

    24seven
You can only access your Virgin.net 24seven account from the computer that you used to register your account. This is because your Virgin.net username, password and dial up number are stored on your computer.

  • Correct, I am on 24/7 tarriff. I downloaded the page from the Vigin website that describes how to set your computer up to dial up and followed the instructions step by step. Then I disconnected my old laptop from the net and put the phone line into the new laptop and attempted to get on the net. I have compared all the settings on both computers and they are identical.
I'll do a google on error 718 now, cheers.
  • Up until about 3 months ago, I was using my laptop downstairs and also my tower upstairs on the same account (obviously not at the same time).
I have just tried my new machine at my mates house using his dial up number and it works fine.
Technology must have moved on in the last couple of months at Virgin, does anyone know of any other I.S.P.s who allow more than one mahine to be used on one account please ?

When I used to use dial-up, I would go with Wanadoo Anytime or Wanadoo Pay As You Go, which should work fine for your circumstances. I have just scanned through the Wanadoo Pay As you Go Terms and Conditions and I didn't spot anything that siad you couldn't use the service on more than two computers, although you should also check yourself. :)

I think that you should delete the DUN that you have created on your new machine and start again.

see I have a new computer, how can I set it up with my existing virgin.net account?
