Ipods - itunes only??

I am looking for a new MP3 and usually get Creative ones but I see the Ipod touch has been reduced, my daughter had a nano and always had trouble getting music onto it. Do ipods only use itunes or can you put your cds or other MP3s onto it?

Thanks

Sarah

hmm.. what troubles.. i've had an ipod before you (probably) knew what one was, and i've never had a problem with getting songs on to it..

put cd in computer, click button, it imports it, plug ipod in, it automatically syncs to my ipod... bam!

there is other software, but i use itunes, i find it reliable and easy..

    P.S i use a mac though..

iTunes will rip your CDs onto your computer for you and you can add folders that contain MP3s you already have on the PC or add single MP3s to your iTunes library.
  • Thanks, not sure what the problems were exactly.

Would I be able to put any of my non itunes mp3s onto it?

I really would like a docking unit and they are mostly made for ipod so I would have a better choice if I got one, the other mp3 I was looking at was this...

    With this dock...

Does anyone know how this would compare with the ipod touch? Theres not a great differance on price but much more choice in docking units.

Ahh thanks, so I am not going to end up having to buy itunes tracks then? :j

Does it sync with Windows Media player the same as other mp3 players?

  • iTunes supports: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes#File_format_support

However if you purchase DRM controlled files (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FairPlay) then you are stuck with them on an iPod for ever. This might not seem a problem now but who knows how things will play out in the future! Sooner or later you may or may not want to move to a different format, supplier or perhaps there will be a new paradigm of music supply - it seems to happen every few years!

Personally I would stick to interchangable DRM free music - for me this is the good old CD. As pointed out above, you can then rip these and do as you will.

Many people love iTunes and if they are happy to let Apple decide how they listen to the music in the future then good luck to them. Not for me though.

Perhaps when they allow other player to use their format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FairPlay#Legal_issues) then I might look again, but why tie yourself in when the alternatives will arguably see greater competition and therefore innovation.

Enjoy your music whatever you decide... :)

I hate itunes I use to use anapod on ipod mini and its so much better. Unfortunately the ipod touch I got yesterday wont work in disk mode like most other ipods or the zen zune we have

I found using touch a real pain putting music/photos etc on, I just wish it would work in disk mode

You can put music on with itunes I woudl never buy mp3's because I prefer to rip my own and keep orginal CD you can do this with ipod but I prefer cdda extractor and then use itunes to upload music on to ipod
