Auto back up of photos?

Im trying to clear up my hard drive and i have loads of doubles of photos. When I delete one, they both disappear, so I must have it on a setting that automatically backs them up (I seem to remember setting it that way ages ago....)
Anyway, how do I get rid of the back-ups? And how do I switch the option off so that when I put on new photos only one is saved? I have about 1500 images saved, granted not all are my photos but about half are.
Ta!
