Live Messenger Problem

My son has a problem with Live Messenger on his laptop and I was hoping that someone might be able to assist.
When he turns the laptop on a Microsoft Windows box pops up stating that Live Messenger has stopped working and that it is searching for a solution. This is replaced by a message saying that a problem has caused the porgram to stop working and that Windows will close tha program and notify if a solution is available.
This has been going on for a few months now. His computer is an Acer Aspire 5920 operating on Vista Home Premium.
