Looking for some advice before buying a new freezer.
Frist free sounds ideal as it saves defrosting but what disadvantages are there?
It's also situated in a porch with no heating so has very variable temperatures according to current weather conditions.

We've got 2 frostfree freezers and haven't noticed any disadvantages at all, but I don't know how well one would function in your porch.
JulesThe ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0 -
I bought a frost free Bosch freezer a few years ago, it's also kept in an unheated utility room and we have had no problems with it. The advantage is that you don't have to mess around defrosting it and all the space is usable for storage of food not the polar ice cap thet my previous freezers have become.0

Do you actually need a freezer, or even a fridge??, with supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi giving the stuff away.0

I got told by the man that repaired my washing machine never to buy a frost free freezer as they are unreliable and more likely to break down. No experience of one but my parents have one and it has been repaired twice so far and its only 2 years old, another repair man also told them that they are unreliable. I have two freezers (large family) simply run down the food so it fits into one and defrost the other by leaving the door open and turning it off, no effort.0

I bought a frost free fridge/freezer when they first came out. Cost almost £800 then and it worked fine for about 5 years. It then became noisier than normal (they do tend to make creaking sounds). Only found out when I opened freezer to find that everything had defrosted that it had stopped working. It was 3 days before Xmas and I rang a few repairers and they wouldn't even come out to look at it as they said they are too expensive to repair. According to them only one part could be responsible for breakdown and the part alone cost almost £100. As you could now pick up new for about £300 they said they are uneconical to repair.
Following this I bought a traditional non frost free fridge freezer as it was in stock and they could deliver that day. I did try again in the new year to geth the broken one fixed as I thought they might have been fobbing me off over Xmas but no joy. Current fridge freezer been going for years now. It is a pain deforsting it as I never seem to manage to empty my freezer completely. I now use my wallpaper stripper (steamer) to defrost it. I can do this in under 30 minutes so I don't have to worry about running freezer down to empty.
Frost free do normally need constant room temperature. If it breaksdown or doesn't work they will try to invalidate gaurantee due to location. I would just move it!!~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

We bought a frost free freezer and although it's only a year old, it's been a big improvement on the old freezer which was a pain to defrost.
The only good thing you could say about the old freezer was it built up your upper body strength as you struggled to pull the drawers out.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that our frost free freezer continues to run perfectly for a few more years.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j :cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Give blood, save a life. 0 -
Thank you everybody. I'll try and check if it would be suitable for an unheated porch.0
