Noises From My New Laptop.

I have just bought a laptop and each time I switch it on, a message comes to say that 'wireless is not connected'. There's a red light at the front which also keeps blinking. At times the laptop makes an awful whining noise even when I'm typing.
Can anyone help please?

  • Wireless is not connected - don't worry about that unless of course it shoudl be - the machine is looking for available wireless connections in the area and not found any. Won't affect normal stand alone workking ata all - if it should be networkedd to a wireless net then you have some setting up to do.
The red light could be any number of things - probably an indicator to show either hard disk in use or the battery is charging - look in your user manual there should be an illustration showing all the indicators and what they do.
Whining noise - assuming it is not coming from the speakers it could be either the hard disk or the CD Drive - check there is no disk in the latter and see what happens. Have you removed all the transit labels and tape etc?
Otherwise give us a few more clues as to the type of noise and where it seesm to be coming from

  • Had an acer laptop which made a buzzing sound that really got on your nerves, sent to acer who failed to repair it - took them 4 weeks to get it back to us unrepaired!!! Luckily bought it from tesco so took it back for full refund, which they happily gave us. Would never buy an acer again, admit they are cheap but their service department are hopeless.

The red light flashes when I brush against the laptop.

No disk no labels! It's a sort of whistling sound. It comes from everywhere, even the keyboard! :(

Probably the fan which sits ontop of the processor. not worth bothering to mess with as the laptop is new, take it back and get it sorted for free, if you try to resovle it yourself you could invalidate the warantee

    Thank you.
  • I have been the happy owner of a Travelmate Acer Laptop computer for two years.

The whirring noise you/ I get from this computer is nothing to worry about.
I believe it is the fan working trying to keep the computer cool.
I have run my pc for over five hours to no problems.

    That LAN stuff...
Might help if you right clicked my network places, chose properties and then right clicked the Local Area Connection to diable it.

Acer's may be cheap but they are good.

    Mr Vincent
Thank you for your reply. However it's not a whirring noise but an ear-splitting whistle that I get, especially if I brush against the front of the laptop.
I'll do what you advise about the LAN stuff.
    Thanks
  • Yeah,
    you are welcome.

The only noise I get from my pc is a dull but tolerable humming noise that can easily silenced by the sound of my radio in low volume.

Sorry but I have not come across an ear splittng noise coming from any of my laptops and safely transported an Acer to Nigeria.
I am no pc expert so what I offer is from personal experience.

Could be worth your while getting some verbal advice from some backstreet internet cafe merchants - these people usually have access to pc experts and then use their info as ammo to talk to the people you bought your laptop pc from. Hope you didn't buy it online as opposed to in person directly from a shop or through mail order and that your laptop did come properly boxed.

Unless you accidently dropped (and I am not making any pointing suggestions) it, I can see no reason for the ear splitting whistle you experience for which my final word would be - sounds faulty to me.

Red lights are always a sign of impending or possible danger.
The only lights flickering on my pc are green

    Nope!

I bought it before Christmas at Currys. I do believe that it's faulty for the noise at times is SHRILL.
    Thanks for your replies.
