Why not ask your garage man for a labour only quote for a cambelt, and price up a genuine VW one (for peace of mind),then take it from there as to oil &filter spec.(if needed) also ask what make of pads he will be fitting.
EDIT:
Sorry,goldspanners-you posted as I was writing. Your post is much more informative, but I was on the same track, sort of, I think! LOL0 -
Thanks for all your help.
Does anyone actually know when you are supposto change the cam belt as i've heard its 40,000 miles some say 60,000?? i am going to ring the vw garage this morning and see what they say. After reading a few other views on the same thing i guess £350 is not a bad price to pay at all considering how much other people have paid?! :rolleyes:0 -
The cambelt schedule for your Polo is 60k or 5years which ever comes first, so if it's not been changed it's almost 2years overdue
@ Goldspanners: Would you honestly rather fit gates/dayco and mintex than genuine if the quotes are the same? I was saying VW do price-match so why not get it all done with genuine stuff and fully VW trained tech's for the same price if you can?! Mintex are hardwearing pads, but a little too hard wearing and not grippy enough to stop you as quickly as genuine. They will last longer but almost all squeal after a few hudred miles and some glaze because the compound is so hard, and that just stops them working half as well. Gates are classed OE but again I have to go back to the fact that genuine parts are made with different materials and to different specifications than aftermarket. They may have the same label but I assure you they are not exactly the same...
Hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction and price Paul

yes i would rather use gates/dayco or mintex over oem.
right, ive mentioned this before,i have been in the gates factory at dumfries where they make all your timing belts,be it for a mondeo or a range rover,i have spoken with people involved in the manufacturing process of these high quality OEM belts and i have been assured that gates branded belts are made from the exact same compound as they use to make ford, land rover,etc,etc... the only differance is the part numbers stamped onto the belts. THEY DO NOT MAKE DIFFERENT COMPUNDS FOR THIER OWN BELTS!
its like burtons biscuit factory, the exact same rich tea biscuits go into waitrose packaging and asda smart price, all from the same biscuit mix and the same ovens.
i dont know what proof you have that gates make an OEM compund and own brand compound.
i dont know about dayco, thats what we were advised to use as an alternative to VW and is supplied by vw trade parts....work permit granted!0 -
its a bit like the planks who say the enngine in an aygo is better than the exact same one as a c1 or 107 because it had a toyota badge on it0

I'm a tad concerned at getting all that the OP has been quoted for £350. If he can, with parts that are not inferior (is it just the cam belt or the cam belt kit?), then if it is all good quality parts and good service and good fitters, then I would say to the OP - go for it, its a bargain.
We use Gates Goldie - rarely have a problem ..
if at all.
In saying that, VW parts are generally speaking, very reasonable.Genie
