Tesco's Christmas Advert!

Well I expect it's all about marketting for Tescos -- like the ads for sweets will target the kids, like the ads for health insurance will target adults and elderly, Tesco here targets the audience that just thinks that Christmas is all about spoiling yourself and each other, that's all. People don't know the winter holidays, they know Christmas, everything is Christmas - Christmas decorations, Christmas catalogues etc.... they're just trying to work the ad so that people know what it's all about !
Yes -- I am French, until now I don't think I ever heard the word Winter Holidays for the Christmas season. I am not going against the points mentioned above about using Religion to advertise, I think this is a very valid argument.
But to be honest, it's like everything else... because a majority of the population thinks of Christmas as a party spoiling indulging time, then the few people that still apply the values of Christmas as explained by the Christian religion no longer count in our society (well I mean to the eyes of all the greedy companies who are just there to make profits)0 -
It is inevitable in a thread like this that people will come along and debunk the origins of Xmas, citing Pagan festivals, wrong dates etc.
What is important is that on December 25th, Christians throughout the world CELEBRATE the birth of someone very special. It may not be historically accurate, but it is the here and now that is important and not the antecedents of the act of faith.
Christmas should be a happy time for all, but at the same time some thought should be given to the sensibilities of those of Christian faith.Other religions are treated with respect, so why do some think Christianity is fair game for ill thought out comment.
If this were true, then Pagans should be outrages at the way that Halloween is now celebrated...the *only* reason Christmas is in December is because it wanted to get rid of the previous Roman celebration which was held on the same date for Mithras (google it). So if anyone still followed Roman religion, they could also be outraged, both at modern treatment and at Christianity for hijacking their festival.
You're also contradicting yourself by claiming firstly that the celebration of someone born over 1,000 years ago is important then in the same breath saying that it iss "the here and now that is important".
Christmas wasn't even legally allowed to be celebrated in Scotland until a few decades ago - something that was implemented by the protestants, so to even argue that it is a "christian" holiday could be debated.
As an agnostic I hate being bormbarded by proponents of religion, be they christian or otherwise and while its true that Britain is fundamentally a christian country, a great number of people follow religions other than christianity, and television has to cater for them all...if I saw the BBC showing *any* religiously overt adverts I would complain.
But yeah, back to the main point - Christianity has no festivsals of its own. The 2 major ones we celebrate were both hijacked to allow christianity to become more prominent.0 -
Mithras was discussed on a Xmas QI - very enlightening. If only Christains knew they were more Mithras .....
