Zonealarm won't uninstall and has blocked my internet connection, I think??

I have an Acer Aspire 5520G, and the free trial version of McAfee that came with it expired yesterday.
I downloaded AVG, disconnected from the Internet, then ran and installed it.
After I did this, Windows Security flagged up messages that my computer wasn't protected, despite AVG running normally, so I thought Windows Defender was conflicting with it( ) and I turned it off.
I then tried to download ZA firewall, and turned off Windows Firewall to run and install the ZA one. It almost installed, but not quite.
Since then, the Windows Firewall seems to switch off and on at will, I can't uninstall ZA as the uninstaller won't work, and I can't connect to the internet. The laptop recognises both the wireless and mobile connections, but will allow Local Access only, and I can't see how to change the settings.

Any advice would be really, truly appreciated, it's doing my head in!
I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

Did you uninstall McAfee before installing AVG? Instructions

You didn't need to turn off the Windows firewall in order to install ZA.

Go to the Zone Alarm Forum for instructions for your particular setup.

Might also be worth checking that the DHCP settings haven't changed. Can you access internet with your email?

Go to control panel, administrative tools, services.
Make sure DHCP client is started and automatic, same with DNS client

If they are ok, try installing zonealarm again if you have the setup file

  • Thanks for the link to the forum Donnie, I had a look and realised access issues can be a big problem...
I checked those settings, George UK and they were both started and automatic.

When I turned on this morning, I got a message to say ZA had stopped working correctly and would be shut down, so I chanced uninstalling again, and it worked, and I now have internet access again! Yay!

I'm not sure what to do about a firewall now, though, I'm not too keen on trying ZA again... I think I'll just stick with the windows one for now.

Thanks again for the replies:D .

Here are your choices, other than the Vista Firewall.
