Dell Laptop Screen

I purchased a Dell Inspiron Sept 2007. The screen is now only half visible. I telephoned Dell today and was told that I could pay £25 to diagnose the problem. How can you diagnose the problem when you can't even use the computer or read the whole screen is beyond me. I declined their offer and asked what was the obvious cause of my problem. I was told the screen was faulty and that it would cost £247.18 to fix - bearing in mind I had paid £300 originally this did not seem reasonable. I asked for a complaints department address and was told there was no address I could write to and that the only way was via email on their website. I was asked if I wanted one of their legal team to call me but I declined. Nevertheless one of their legal team did call me and asked me whether I expected the laptop to be fixed for free by writing a letter and that any letter I sent would go directly to him and that it would not be fixed for free. I asked him why he had called me - was he trying to put me off writing a letter?

Sorry this is so long winded - can anyone help? I need an address to write to in the UK to complain. Having read some of the other threads I understand there is a Sales of Goods Act which should hopefully cover me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
