Taking O/d Charges Out Of Benefits

  • I second the Post Office Card Account (or POCA for short). Especially as their future was assured today.

Apart from anything else you can't go overdrawn on a POCA. Although they can only be used to pay in benefits and I think I'm right in saying they can't be used to pay direct debits out of (which are often cheaper for paying bills).

Failing that, she should open a basic bank account that doesn't allow overdrafts - most banks offer one of these, although they vary with what they do and don't provide (eg debit cards, direct debits, very small overdrafts).

Of course, this would mean she would not be able to borrow money from an overdraft. No bad thing, but worth bearing in mind - an overdraft is useful when there's no food in the cupboard!

Settle up with HSBC and wave goodbye to them (or words to that effect).

That was not a very helpful comment, and is not always true!

I assume this was a joke in poor taste. Otherwise offensive and ignorant.
