I recently had to demolish a brick fireplace, I got of these...

...I have to say I was very impressed, it's a well put together piece of kit and simply destroys bricks with ease. It may not be a famous name power-toy/tool but for less than £35 you can't go wrong. You only have to read through the reviews for this drill on Screwfix to get an idea of how good it is.

    :D

Sounds like the same constuction as our house. Broke my old drill within weeks of moving in!

I've since got the Argos own brand (can't remember name) SDS drill and it's done me fine. I've heard (indepedent tool hire shop round the corner, for example) that Bossh are the best.

Do not drill into concrete without wearing safety glasses or goggles and a dust mask.
And get some decent ear defenders, such as Peltor Optime

pre cast concrete construction normally has steel reinforcing rods if you hit one of these it can be a right sod you will normally tell easily if you have. fixing curtain rails in the wrong places onto a lintel above a window usually. for some jobs where you have got an oversize hole due to problems drilling into concrete can be overcome using chem fix anchors these look like a test tubes with sand and liquid in, they are a great way of fixing into concrete.

just been and got one from the trafford park screwfix. will let you all know how i get on with it. looks a bargain for 35 quid. for the odd diy job certainly.

would have got the dewalt (90 quid) if i was drilling every day.

I am a building surveyor and will provide advice based upon what you tell me. It is just that, advice and not instructions. Based on the fact you're getting it for free expect it to be vague! :D

I told you so! My house is made of engineering bricks because I was unaware of the fact till they were delivered. It is a right pig to drill into the outer walls. Or it was, until I got the SDS.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
