We have been doing a favour for a "friend" by looking after his car that he has parked on the public road outside our house.
Now, the mot and insurance has expired on the car, and the road tax will soon. Without asking us, he has registered the car to our address with the DVLA and will be completing an SORN for when the tax expires.
However, the car will still be on the road outside our house and he as no intention of moving it in the near future.
What will the legal consequence to us, having this "illegal" car registered to our address? Also, if he receives any fines, will this impact on our credit rating, being registered to our address?
Thanks in advance.

you will get the fines if it is registered to you, i would get the address changed back as soon as possible to your "friends" address, if he tries to change it back to yours again ring up the DVLC when the new log book turns up on your doorstep and tell them that the car is not yours straight awayEx forum ambassador

Simple solution - get it towed away.0

If he declares SORN, it will have to be parked OFF THE ROAD.
Get him to move the car and give DVLA a different address.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

I am sure some nasty neighbour will eventually report on the car if the road tax runs out anyway. My only concern is really if it is going to affect our credit standing ... ie.. will balliffs come knocking? will we have problems gettng a second mortgage?
not really bothered about the car itself.0 -
All you will get is DVLA sending you a letter telling you that the car has been spotted on a public road and there is a fine to be paid.
It won't affect credit rating etc.0 -

The only time your credit rating will be at risk is if the car owner(registered at your address) fails to pay a fine. This can put your address on a 'black list' with the credit reference companies. This always happened in the past and although it shouldn't happen now, these companies can be pretty slapdash in their checks.
It really isn't a problem. Just send a letter(registered) to DVLA and explain the situation and tell them the car is nothing to do with you.0 -
If the car is spotted without a valid tax disc on a public road, it will be clamped and the release fee is £200, £120 of which can be refunded if a valid tax disc is shown at a local DVLA office within 14 days. Of course, the car would then need to be insured and MOT'd to actually buy the tax disc.
If the fine is not paid within 24 hours, the fine goes up to £280, and if not paid within 48hours, the car will be towed away and stored at a cost of £15 per day. Id get the address changed on the v5 immediately and tell your friend to remove it. If it is not paid then you are looking at being taken to court (its not registered under your name is it??) and then at bailiffs coming to your house for non payment. It needs to be kept off the road or taxed, mot'd & insured, or sold.

Sounds dodgy - the moral of this story is don't do favours for friends. If he really is a friend, ask then to notify DVLA and change the address - that way, apart from having it outside your house, you'll have nothing to do with it. At the same time, I'd write to the DVLA explaining the situation and notifying them that it has been registered at your address without your knowledge or authority. Just out of interest what sort of car is it and how old it is?0
