It was an expensive place when I went a few years ago, drink especially. The bus was definitely worth doing. Trinity College (saw the Old Library), the Guiness Storehouse and Dublin Castle. O Neills was a great pub as Ruth-honey said. The Temple Bar (area) didn't feel very local to me, but it was lively at night.

  • I went with my dad for 2 nights / 3 days about 2 months ago. When you are at the airport you can buy a 3 day bus ticket, which includes the city tour buses. That ticket will take you from the airport to the city centre too, so no extra transfer costs. You can take the bus right out to the posh seaside suburbs like Dalkey. There is a quicker train they call the DART, but we didn't use it, we were happy on the bus. If you haven't booked accomodation yet, we stayed at ABC guest house which was clean, had a tv in the room and very friendly and helpful owners. It is about 10 minutes on the bus to the city centre from this accomodation, and about 25 minutes from the airport (bus goes right past the guesthouse). I would highly recommend splashing out and going on a day tour of Glendolough (no idea if the spelling is right, I don't think it is). It was the highlight, the scenery was stunning. Also, I was advised not to waste money on the Guiness tour. If you do the Glendalough tour you will most likely have local tour guides who can recommend places to eat etc. in Dublin. I did not find Dublin itself a particularly inspiring city, especially in the cold.
  • There are some decent offers here if you book in advance. http://www.visitdublin.com/specialoffers/FoodAndDrinksOffers/dublin.aspx I've been a couple of times and its expensive! Try to think of it as a trip to London in terms of prices!
Going again in February and I'm going to book some ofthose deals when they come available for the dates we're going.

I used to live in Dublin and went back for the weekend and was shocked at the prices. In the city centre you will be lucky to get a pint of beer for €5 - £4.25. We took a taxi and the meter was at €6.10 (£5.20) before it moved and it wasn't long before it shot up, especially as the roads were so clogged.

If I were going and looking to save money I would do the following which are free:

    National Gallery on Merron Sq.
Tour of Leinster House (weekends only)
    Irish Museum of Modern Art
St Michan's Church (Catacombs, including Bram Stoker's body)

Things not too expensive but last long:

    Kilmainham Gaol
    Ceol Irish Traditional Music Centre

    Good walks:
    Sandymount beach
    Poolbeg
    Phoenix Park
St. Stephen's Green to feed the ducks.

My one piece of advice would be to lay off the drinks and the restaurants as they will cripple you. Also, there is no public transport to speak of after 11pm so try to stay close to the centre of town as it may work out more cost effective if you are heading into town in the evenings.
