Meal Deal at Booths

I think the significance of this post has been lost in some people not being aware of the standing of Booths. As has been pointed out, they are a quality retailer. I am familiar with the variety of goods and prices offered by the majority of mainstream and discount retailers. We have a Waitrose 15 minutes walk away; Booths about a 15 minute drive away. I would rate the general quality and price of goods generally in terms of, or better than, Waitrose. The range of local and other more unusual items in Booths is very good. (On a particular note of interest) compared to other supermarkets, Booths offer a wide and very different range of beers, and when on special offer, can be exceptionally good value.
It is rather naive to dismiss this offer on the basis that it is "cheap" (I use the term loosely) and therefore nasty i.e. must be full of fat and sugar, and assuming that simply because Booths is a regional retailer and relatively unknown that it doesn't offer the same quality as a better known brand e.g. M&S. Booths, offers at least, if not greater quality compared to M&s.
My guess is Booths is using this as a loss-leader (or probably more realistically, as a marginal profit maker) simply trying to gain a foothold in the current "dinner 4 2 4 a tenner" market.
I hope to take advantage of this offer.0 -
There does not seem to be a vegetarian choice with Booths.Filiss0

I have to say that I agree 100% with somebody who says "I doubt that a ready-meal retailing at an original price of 2 quid can be described as top-quality. It will most likely be full of fat, salt and sugar..."
and to list the following
Sausage & Mash (£1.99)
Cottage Pie (£1.99)
Shepherds Pie (£1.99)
Fish Pie (£2.69)
Lasagne (£1.74)
Spag Bol (£1.99)
Spag Meatballs (£2.09)
as your main courses is hardly likely to give you a gourmet following anyway.
But if that's what people in the Northwest really want, I would have to say - each to their own! :rotfl:
Just for the record, I don't think that anyone described it as being "cheap". Don't recall Marks & Spencer ever being described as being "cheap", either. Thanks to all who post constructively.

What is wrong with you? Your post is full of nastiness! Someone already said that the price is probably to entice you, possibly a loss leader. It's working isn't it? Now you HAVE heard of Booths and this is exactly what Booths wants.
Belittling someone elses choice and trying to imply that by wanting these types of meals, they somehow have lower standards than you, isn't very nice now is it?0 -
I personally think its a bit nasty that a new poster comes on here and is treated in this way!

"Roger Rampant" - your response is a classical one from the small group of sad, self-satisfied, smug types who post on here under their guise of anonymity dedicated to trying to belittle other peoples' posts and opinions in a futile attempt to try and bolster their self worth.
"I have to say that I agree 100% with somebody who says 'I doubt that a ready-meal retailing at an original price of 2 quid can be described as top-quality. It will most likely be full of fat, salt and sugar...' "
So you simply agree simply with someone's assumptions 100% - ever thought about checking the facts? (Though I would have thought that anyone with your limited intellectual capacity would have agreed at least 110%).
"as your main courses is hardly likely to give you a gourmet following anyway."
They're flogging pig's trotters in the posh places now!
"But if that's what people in the Northwest really want..."
Why have you assumed I live in the Northwest? I neither live there, nor am I originally from there.
Yes - supermarket ready meals are typically associated with high fat, salt and sugar content- M&S included. These meals could be as well. But I would view this as an occasional, cheap-and-cheerful treat. I do not subsist on such items.
How apposite that "roger rampant" is an anagram of "arrogant pram", though an anagram of "ignorant plonker" would have been even more so.
You've got to laugh at the idea of a self-styled epicurean and all-round arbiter of good taste admitting to living in Northamptonshire!
I won't bother with the smiley face - though I am having a good laugh at you.0 -
I cannot believe some people. Booths is probably the highest quality chain of food supermarkets in the country if not the world. If you care to visit any of their stores you will find an excellent range of the highest quality food and drinks anywhere. The range of cooked meats, cheeses, fresh meats, fruit and vegetables is exceptional - when did you last see calabrese in the average supermarket? I have just posted their malt whisky offer and feel that this cannot be beaten anywhere - if I am wrong please tell me. As Bob Dylan once said "Don't criticise what you can't understand".0

Don't worry about the ignorant people, up here we have Booths and they're just jealous because they're missing out.0

I responded to the stupid comment about MacDonalds in a way that I felt was appropriate, and I make no apologies for that.
As regards people having lower standards, I think that is a somewhat simplistic view, to be perfectly frank. My family eat an extremely wide variety of foods, and I would assume that the same applies to most families, regardless of what part of the country they come from or what their "social standing" might be. I generally shop at Morrisons, and made it quite clear that I can't afford to eat M&S food on a regular basis - although I would certainly like to, as I have always found it to be excellent quality.
So we occasionally have a MacDonalds, and we sometimes have some of the basic type of ready meals that are shown in the Booths list, but generally we eat at home and have fresh vegetables and some sort of meat. Each time I shop I will buy a few luxury items, but we can't afford as many as we would like.
That doesn't change the fact that a ready meal which originally retailed at two pounds probably can't be described as top-quality, and will most likely be full of fat, salt and sugar...Don't worry about the ignorant people, up here we have Booths and they're just jealous because they're missing out.I personally think its a bit nasty that a new poster comes on here and is treated in this way!

I look forward to visiting Booths next time I happen to be up in that part of the country. Thanks to all who post constructively.
