removing and installing a hard drive?

Does anyone know of any sites that give step by step instructions, hopefully with pictures, for removing and installing a hard drive. got my 7 year old a pc off ebay but its only got a 4gb hard drive and its nearly full now ive installed the software I got for her. I have a old pc which doesnt work which has a 50gb hard drive, so what im hoping to do is swap that for my 20gb one and then install the 20gb in my daughters along with her 4 gb.

This old pc also had a cd writer which id also like to add to my pc and a dvd drive which id like to put in my daughters. If anyone could help me with any good links it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

  • A quick trawl of Google brought up a few guides and the following should help you:

  • Thanks for the links chippy. I will have a good read through them later when its a bit quieter and give it a go.
  • Hi
Not to difficult, what you need in each comp, is 2 ide cables, which are connected to your primary and secondary slots on your motherboard and then you can set up 4 devices, 2 on each cable. You just line up the pins, on the ide cables, and plug in.

Each Ide cable has 3 connectors, one goes to your motherboard and the other 2 are for connecting 2 devices. Hd is always set to master, and cd/r is set to slave. Thats the way I've always set them, but other people do it differently. Of course you don't have to put 2 devices on 1 cable, if you only have 2 devices you can use both primary and secondary, and set both to master, much better.
The blue connector attaches to the motherboard.
The black connector attaches to the primary, or master, drive.
The gray connector attaches to the secondary, or slave, drive
And don't forget the power connectors, they can only go in one way, and if cdr/dvd the little cable for sound.

    Hope this helps
