I've recently heard of this and wondered how safe people think Credit Suisse bank is? There is no compensation scheme, hence my question.

Are you are thinking of corporate bonds on the Asia/Euro dollar market ?
If you mean that then you can buy the ICICI Asiandollar bond detailed below with a yield to maturity of almost 20% !
No guarantee and no compensation if ICICI goes belly up otherwise full payment .
