and also why buy a ps3 if all he's going to end up doing is playing his old ps2 games?

why not keep the ps2 for the war games and go for a Wii a totally different gaming experience and a console that is for ALL the family from 3yrs to 70+

ok have finally decided to get the xbox....have started looking on internet sites for the best offers and there seems to be quite a few different xboxes ranging from 159-240.... whats the difference with all these boxes??

The Arcade is the cheapest.The same console as the other two although you don't get hard drive and wired pads. Although the supplied pads may be wireless these days, its been a while.

The Premium/Pro is the middle ground. Used to have 20 gb hard drive but now 60gb. Same console as the Arcade and Elite although comes with wireless pads and the hard drive allowing you to download demos and install games with the coming update.

Elite, the same as the Pro/Premium but in console is Black with 120gb hard drive. For those with to much money really unless it must be in Black.

For most people the Pro is the way to go.

I know it will spoil the surprise, but I suggest that you ask him which he would prefer. It's a lot of money if you get it wrong and he ends up disappointed. He might even prefer to have the money to spend on a load of games that he doesn't already own for the PS2. I only say this because I know that I'd much rather have a couple of hundred pounds to increase my PS2 game collection than have a new PS3 (well at least until FFXIII is released next year).

I still think the xbox 360 is the way forward. the level of detail, graphics, sound, picture quality far exceeds the PS2, and there is a cracking amount of games availble. I play similar sort of games to the OP's OH, and the xbox was the only logical choice!

I'd agree with going for an xbox. If you won't be playing online then the price difference alone is going to make a big difference.

I would suggest going for the premium/pro model over the arcade- the harddrive is really worth paying the extra for.
