Needs advice on a computer

Computer is dying on me, I wish it would hang on for a few more days so that I can search for a new one. I think, it's the fan, it is making such a racket, sometimes it's OK, but the noise comes on and off. It's no point of having it repaired as it is nearly 5 yrs old and I want a flat monitor. I am not that good to sort the fan out myself. Please, techie can I still continue to use it even with that noise, I have got the impression it is going to blow up. I just need more time to look for a decent computer. Also if anybody buys from Dell, which number do you use? Thanks.

that fan noise may last for months...I would worry more if it suddenly stops !! ...mine made that noise for 6 months untill i finally changed it....my brothers PC has done it for 2 years and is still going strong

I would just make sure that I backed up any important stuff now just in case, documents and Outlook Express address books etc

If you can hang on for a little while Dell tend to have some good deals at the end of January :)

or the power supply fan, but its not a big deal its more annoying than anything else, as browntoa said just back stuff up, and if u want take the sides of and see which one is making the noise, we can give you better advice if we know which one it is.

Do you think, it is the fan because sometimes it is OK and sometimes not. Like now, it is working OK without any noise. I swear I can smell burn or is it my imagination.I just hope it will hang on until I can search for a decent dell. Please how do I back up, I can only use floppy and they do not hold a lot of data. I have got my music library on it, and I guess, I am not too bothered with the rest. I am very nervous about computer, I think, I will leave it alone and it is time to get a new one and it's going to be my treat for Next Year. Thanks to you all for your great advice.

No, it does not. Not sure whether it could hang on, I heard the Dell starts on the 29th. It has been switching itself off about three times since yesterday. Thanks to all of you for your help. Sorry if I keep repeating myself. I wish it would hang on till I buy one off the internet. It looks as if I had to go to PC world.

if it's shutting down it sounds like the CPU Fan...if it overheats then it shuts down

you could try removing anything that is around the PC that is stopping airflow and making sure that the airholes in the side/back are clear of dust and fluff..if possible let a fan push air into it, should keep it limping on until you get a new one
