thanks for the pointer to the T&C so I know for a fact I am breaking my agreement with them if I use a prefix code and what the possible consequences are - its interesting to note though that they currently think Im NOT a line rental customer because of their mess up with my line rental

the question does remaion though that the prefix 1280 has definately not been barred as yet so who actually charges me should I risk using it ???

With other operators like call18185 you actually have to register to use the prefix code sevice so they can bill you but as I said in my first post the 1280 code is useable right now without registration BUT I have no account or billling arrangement with BT ?

Is there another Onetel line rental user around who could test the 1280 prefix code as Im wondering if I only have access to 1280 because of the line rental mess up ?

I would suggest that if you are not being charged a line rental fee by Onetel, that you are probably still being charged one bt BT? This would explain why you are able to still dial via BT, using their 1280 access code.

In your original post you stated that you had tried the BT access code to dial a freephone number. It may well be that BT and Onetel have a mutual agreement that BT will be allowed to carry 0800. A better test would be for you to dial 1280 and then a national 01/02 number. If your call is successful it would suggest that you still have full BT access, and it might also suggest that BT are still going to bill you for line rental, unless a suitable period of time elapses without billing from BT for your exchange line rental.

I would only "ignore" people who get on their moral high horse and say I shouldn't under any circumstances risk breaking the agreement - I would point out again that currently Onetel do NOT think Im a line rental customer (due to an oversight on their part) so it can be argued that I am not actually breaking any rules
I was not making any moral judgement. I only suggested that you are asking for advice and rebutting all of it. Why bother?

Soon I don't think we will be interested in your remarks about your line rental, or public wrestling with your conscience, viz - "it can be argued ..."

If you want to dial 1280 and find out what happens, just get on with it.
  • If you have line rental with Onetel you will most likely still be able to dial 1280 to overide the calls to the BT network as it costs Onetel 50p per month per line to bar access to short codes (1280,1899....).

BT will pass any call detail records to Onetel for all calls you make using the 1280 override and they will charge Onetel for the calls at the applicable standard BT Wholesale rate.

Most providers will bill you for these calls at a premium as you are instructed not to use the override code as part of the T&C's. Therefore think very carefully about using 1280 when you have WLR as you may end up being charged much more than the standard 1.1ppm.
  • I made a couple of chargeable test calls on the 27th using 1280
    before I saw phonemans theory

The havent appeared on my online Onetel "unbilled calls" i.e. it looks like they are not directly charged by Onetel so I am going to wait to see if phonemans theory is correct - it does sound the most likely scenario assuming Im not getting free calls due to computer glitches over the line rental issue which even I have to admit is pretty unlikely

FYI Im definately not being billed by BT at all and havent been for over 6 months - BTW I think one possible reason for the line rental !!!! up is that I was in the process of transferring back to BT a few months back because Onetel couldnt set up my voicemail but once Onetel realised I was doing this they magically produced a working voicemail service and I cancelled the transfer by calling BT - it maybe that the transfer wasnt cancelled on the Onetel end

my parents have just got an orchid ranger phone .
Daytime calls are via 18866 .
How do they divert the odd call to BT ,just to keep the caller display thing right .
    Will 1280 override the 18866 setttings .

Yes they could dial 1280 before the number.Or if the they make the occassional ngn 0845/0870 call set the ranger so that 0845/0870 traffic goes via BT,which will also be cheaper for them.
    PF.
  • If you don't get billed let us know as I will change to Onetel and put all my calls over 1280. FYI - The current industry standard is that calls should be billed within 3 months of the call date.

The current industry standard may well be that calls are billed within three months but as the price of the calls made are due to be paid by the customer I think that you will find that either BT or Onetel will be looking for their money at some stage.

As this thread is now stepping into a "grey" area I am going to close it and refer to abuse.
