My 19 yr old daughter is at university in London and only drives when she is at home out of term time.
I am looking for cost effective ways of insuring her on my car for short periods (ie: 4 to 6 weeks). My present insurance company can add her as named driver but charge a lot to add and delete her from the policy.
Does anyone know of an insurer that can offer short term cover?

Im really interested in this too as I would like to borrow my dads car sometimes (4x4) but in the past when we have looked it was going to cost 100's of pounds to add me as a named driver. This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0

norwich union - try going through quidco as you can earn cashback for their policies, but not sure if that is only for an annual policy but worth a try.0

Just had another look round Gaz - it does seem like most companies will only offer this sort of insurance to over 21's:( I can't think of anything else other than I remember Elephant insurance used to do 10 month bonus accelerator policies, but that's not exactly "short term" either.
Will keep you posted if I spot anything else0

Provident insurance plc do short term cover, but they only do it through brokers and don't have a website anyone can access. They are your best bet.
Think its about £60-£70 for a months cover depending on vehicle and postcode.0

Why would they want to add and delete her? (except of course to make money on endless policy changes) Just leave her on the policy as a named driver. Being named driver doesn't mean she would have to drive it X amount of times to be insured.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0

Thanks for your input but the point is that if I insure for the whole year it costs me about £400 to have her as a named driver. What I am looking for is a situation where I can add her as a named driver for a short period and pay a pro rata amount say £40 per month. If she drives the car for 4 months during the year I will pay £160 in total.
My present insurance company can do short term cover but they want to charge £25 for each amendment to the policy and this could cost an additional £150 so I am not really saving very much. I have had other policies where they have only charged about £5 for amendments, that it what I am looking for coupled with a competitive premium of course.0

the last time i renewed I knew I would require a green card for Europe and i made sure it was given free anytime I asked for it. At your next renewal say you are going to someone else as they are cheaper, but will stay if they remove or reduce the changes charge. In reality it costs them nothing to make a change.
If you think about it, most insurance quotes will be less than £25 difference, but with one change, you go over the other competitor who may not charge for changes!0

I often hire a car for a few days rather than own one. Fully comp insurance is included but with a hefty excess - £300 I think. I can pay an additional sum to avoid the excess but this has rocketed from £2.50 per day to £10!!!! Huge increase and almost doubles the cost of the hire. Is it possible to get temp excess waiver insurance somewhere else? The temp cover Norwich Union offer if not going ot be any cheaper in this scenario. Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm a 42 male driver with no claims in last 20 years. Thank you.0
