Price for one
ECC memory is normally a lot more expensive (normally installed in high end servers, where they are prepared to pay the premium)
ECC ram is Error Correcting Code checking ram ie it has an extra 8 bits that checks for errors before passing data through, how it works exactly is beyond my knowledge. but it does run slightly slower than none-ECC ram.
for cost and performance your best bet is going for None-ECC ram.Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0 -
Some PC's/Laptops that are not designed for ECC memory do not like it and most probably wont boot.Go for a the basic memory and you wont go far wrong.
IIRC ECC has an extra 1bit attched to any data it passes to the northbridge (it passes in multiples of 9 instead of 8 bits), it works in that if all of the 8 bits add up to a even number (ie 10010011) then the parity bit is "0" , if the 8 bits add up to an odd number, the parity bit is "1".
By checking if the 8 bits are odd or even and then cross referencing it with the parity bit , the data can be checcked for some errors but not all. The data would still be read as okay if the data was changed from "11111111" to "00111111" as it's still an even number.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

Why are you intrested in ECC memory? If you already have it then just try it, if it doesn't support it you will get a Beep code from the bios (a number of beeps). It won't cause any harm to your computer if it is faulty or unsupported. Remember RAM doesn't like static which can easily render your memory unusable or create errors. Usually a good idea to run memtest on your machine after installing RAM, bad RAM can cause intermittent errors etc.
Also one more point do not mix ECC and non ECC memory - Most motherboards will work with ECC RAM0
