Akbank Fixed Deposit Bonds are STILL available with passport cover from Dutch/UK authorities (should anyone wish that after the Icesave nightmare - although [it has to be said] the Dutch were very rapid in their response to the debacle) - HOWEVER THE RATES ON THESE HAVE NOW BEEN REDUCED AND WILL BE UP ON THEIR WEBSITE LATER TODAY.

I know that for the NEW Monthly Interest the rates are as follows:

1 Year - 6.3 Gross ; 4.90 Net
2 Year - 6.0 Gross ; 4.67 Net

This should give some who are fortunate to hold considerable (e.g., lifetime's) savings a sigh of relief as it does at least provide another covered outlet in an ever diminishing market.

It may be covered by the Dutch compensation scheme, but do people really want to put money into an offshoot of a Turkish Bank they've never heard of and that is only B/BB rated for the sake of a fraction of 1% of interest? Anyone who wants to do that has learnt nothing from the banking crisis in my opinion. Hope my council has stayed well away from this.
