New house... who do I go with?

Hello monesyavers

I am moving into a new-build house at the end of the month, and therefore we need to find a new supplier. We're told that the house is very energy effiient so I expect my consumption of gas to come down from 1073 units but electricity to stay the same at 5119.

What's the best way of chosing a new supplier - is it to go for an online comparison as I normally would do for my house, or is there a smarter way?

Also, at the moment is it best to go for fixed or variable rate products?

Many thanks in advance

Darren

Is your old gas meter Metric or Imperial?

    1073 units could be approx 12,000 kWh(metric) or 35,000kWh(Imperial)

The online comparison sites are the best way - although try several.

    Internet accounts are best.

With possible/probable price reductions in the offing, fixed/capped accounts are not as attractive as they were, although in the longer term - who knows what will happen?

Certainly there doesn't seem to be much prospect of prices rising in the near future, so there doesn't seem much point in fixing now and paying a premium over other rates - you have plenty of time in which to decide if a gamble on a fixed rate is merited.

Darren, who supplies you today and are you on a fixed/capped tariff?

  • Thanks Cardew that's great help :)

spiro - we are currently with Scottish Power tied in until 2009 - but they have just told me my direct debit is going up from £80 which i was paying to EDF to.... £120 - which doesn't seem right to me and I am currently querying it.

What baffles me is that I paid my first bill and it left my account in CREDIT... so I don't see why they need more money from me

You'll have deemed contracts with whichever supplier the builder would have already arranged the supplies with.

Probably best to just carry on using them until you get an actual idea of your consumption in your new home and then do a comparison check.

There are so many variables in a different property compared to your existing one that anything else will be just guesswork.
