Kerala is famous for its rich cultural heritage. Thrissur is referred to as the cultural capital of Kerala. The history of the ancient town of Thrissur dates bacvk to 9th century. The foundation for the modern Thrissur was laid by The Raja of Cochin, Raja Rama Varma. He was also called Sakthan Thampooran. The town derived its name from “Tri-Siva-Perur” or the place with three Shiva temples, Vadakkumnathan, Kottapuram Siva temple and Punkunnam temple. It also means the place with the holy name of Shiva. The town is also called Vrishbadripuram and Ten Kailasam.
The Vadakkumnathan temple attracts crowds of tourists from all over the world. The annual festival of this temple is world famous. It is the most colorful festival of Kerala. It is celebrated in the month of Medam( April-May). The festivities consist of processions of caparisoned elephants bearing an umbrella holder and a peacock fan carrier. The ten deities around the Vadakkumnathan temple “meet” here for a day of celebration. There are impressive processions from the Krishna temple at Thiruvambadi and the Devi temple at Paramekavu. The other sightseeing attractions in and around Trissur include the art and Archeological museum, zoo, peechidam, pechi-vazhani wildlife sanctuary. Trissur is also the center for the Kerala Sahitya Academy, Kerala Nataka Academy and Kerala Lalith Kala Academy.
The archeological museum is located on the road leading to Town hall. It is open from 10 am to 5 pm on all days except Mondays and national holidays. It has a grand collection of very old historical articles. One can plan to visit the temple in the months of April-May to witness the grand Pooram festival. After the festivities, one can visit the Archeological museum using the local transport.
