Using dormant Barclaycard for first time - will they check my current credit score?

I got a Barclaycard in 2004 as part of some stupid student promotion (you got a free popcorn machine if you signed up!...) cut it up as soon as it arrived, and did the same with the replacement card they sent me earlier this year.

I think my credit rating now will be pretty bad due to repeatedly going over my overdraft limits on 3 of my current accounts (I also have one with Barclays that I haven't used in years, has about 70p in it). So I'm thinking of calling Barclaycard to ask for another replacement card and PIN, so I can build up a positive credit history with small purchases on the card.

What I need to know is whether they would get suspicious about the fact that I've destroyed the previous cards and now suddenly want to start using one, and would they then check my rubbish credit history and decline? Am I better off just cancelling the card completely?

Any advice gratefully received!!

If the account is still open then they won't do a new credit check, they'll just send you a replacement card.
