external HDD wont work

ok my external hard drive works ok on my pc but when i plug it into the laptop it shows nothing 
there was no disc with this and its plug and play, i have tried going into device manager but nothing i have also tried uninstalling all usb devices and rebooting (as advised) but nothing
on my pc it just plugs in and makes a ding noise and away it goes, but on the lappy a big fat nothing
anyone any ideas please?

If device manager is showing usb ports as listed, it could possibly be the amount of power required by the external drive is not being supplied by the laptop? Does it have an option on the external drive for an external power source such as an adaptor?0

Have you checked the disk management to see if it's showing in there ?
Start / Settings / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Management
If it's showing up in there it may allow you to assign a drive letter to it.0 -

its not showing on there
edit: it is showing on there so i gave it a letter but still nothing ><
