Paying by credit card and company won't take card details over the phone

Options
Can anyone help? I have ordered items from a company in Belfast (I live in Scotland.) The amount is fairly large so can't pay it by direct debit. However, when I went to pay it, the company won't accept my Mastercard over the phone- ie. remote payment. I contacted my credit card provider and they stated there is nothing they can do- it is the decision of the company.
Is there anything I can do? The credit card is interest free and the reason I got it was to pay off this payment without incurring charges and don't want to pay for the privilege of buying with a credit card. Any help appreciated, it's driving me crackers!! Ash

I think you can do two things.

Firstly, ask them how they would normally expect a remote customer to pay for their product or service and see if that is an option that is open to you.

Secondly, you can take your business elsewhere.

It sounds to me as if they are not at all geared up for distance-selling if they won't take a credit card payment over the phone. If they are not geared up for selling, how will they be geared up to provide support if the service or product turns out to be unsatisfactory?

All you can do is contact the seller and if they cant sort it out, the they don't get your money!

  • If you want to buy the goods and really want to do business with this company, ask them if they accept CC details by fax.

I've had this once and faxed them my card details. It's insecure but I wanted to buy the goods then and they were offering a cheap price. Also the card was expiring in a few weeks so I didn't care much if faxing wasn't very secure.

However, keep in mind that they can keep the fax sheet around and anyone can copy your card details.

Ask what other options are available to you ...

Do they accept paypal? as you can pay with cc thru pp ...

If rthe card is int free then is it a SBT card ...if so then you could tx cash to current acc then pay by bacs ? (but you will prob incur a 2-3% BT fee)

Phone them up and check the credit card details by fax option

They may accept a signed letter from you asking them to debit your card.

We take card payments at work (via an internet screen) over the phone and the card services provider has recently bounced a couple of card payments back (taken ages ago) and said that unless we have a signed receipt agreeing to the transaction then that is it (and obviously we don't have any such signed receipt) so we have just lost money .. especially as we know the transactions were genuine to start off with, it's just people trying it on later (and getting away with it!)
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
