This is worth a read : http://www.weeklygripe.co.uk/a292.asp if your thinking of joining them.

    This bit made be smile.

"On our first bill there was statement ‘Here at Talk Talk we’re truly committed to providing you with the highest level of service’; I notice on our latest bill that this statement has disappeared – very strange that!

This is a great insight into the "Dis-service levels of Talk Talk & BT". I am now in a state of utter despair  Are there any Telephone/Broadband suppliers out there who are any good. It seems that they are like politicians, only working hard to feather their own nest and screw the common man .

The voices in my head are telling me that on the planet Zog every thing is absolutely fine. Ah! But how to get there.
  • Talktalk have just set a 4th debt collection agency after me for money they themselves admitted I didn't owe them two years ago. The stress of repeated threats to take me to court, followed by silence when they finally realise the error, and then 6 months later a claim for a different amount (?!?) -is not worth their crummy service. Don't touch them.
If there was a puking green smiley here I'd use it!
  • Talk Talk has been good for me on the phone/broadband package for the last two years since joining them.

I do have two gripes though.

I don't get the "free" broadband as they tell me that my exchange has not got the correct gear and BT won't let them have access..so I have to pay an extra £10/month. I was told my exchange would be upgraded within 7 months of joining but this was plainly not true

A couple of weeks ago I received a letter from them telling me they were increasing my broadband charge by £3/month as they were upgrading the service/speed.

I phoned and complained about this and managed to get a £2/month credit to my account.

Anyone have any further comment on this imposed charge...I'm not sure it is enforceable?

    Rgds

  • Think very carefully before signing up, you will be tied into a long contract. There are people who are quite satisfied with TT but there are also people who have found it a nightmare (mostly due to their CS). If broadband is not too important then you may consider it worthwhile but if you need a reliable quality connection I wouldn't risk going with TT or Tiscali for that matter, your much better off paying a bit more & getting an ISP with a short contract, you do tend to get what you pay for. I currently have a 3 month contract with BE ... the longest I have had since first having broadband about 6 years ago (always had 1 month before). A good place to go & ask questions about service is http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ just visit the forums. Also worth a look http://www.dslzoneuk.net/isp_ratings.php
Also be careful when phoning to complain & getting offered a better package at the same or a cheaper price (this applies to many isp's usually ones with long contracts) you will often have your contract reset, so if your 12 months into an 18 month contract you could find yourself at the beginning of another 18 months.

PLUS NET at £9.99 a month costs only £7.65 a month if you use the Quidco site which gives £28 cashback. Martin seems to have overlooked this saving on his money-site

Is this a better deal than TalkTalk?

1] If you're on BT it saves the hastle of switch-over to TalkTalk which some forum members find a nightmare; you keep your BT line and phone number

2] The PlusNet contract is monthly you are not tied in for a year or 18 months if you're not happy with it

3] It has one of the highest feedback ratings; Talk Talk one of the lowest

4] It has good write ups, Martins site describes PlusNet as................
    "The overall cheapest:
Plusnet Option 1. £9.99/month inc. free wireless set-up.

Plusnet's* £10/month package has received consistently good user feedback. The cash gets you a speedy 8 Mbps, but there's a 2 GB download limit, though thankfully this only applies between 8am and midnight. Overnight there are no limits, so if you set the computer to do downloads then, and just surf the rest of the time, this is a real bargain."

Do you have any other comments/observations on PlusNet v TalkTalk?

Welcome to the MSE forums b0ardrider.

    Can you clarify that please?

You are clearly still paying your line rental to BT but you state Tiscali "put claim to" all your calls.

Are you saying you have tried to make the necessary 6 calls per quarter via BT (using the 1280 prefix) but Tiscali ignores that prefix and sends those calls over its own network?

Sorry, no I'm saying I didn't realise I would need to make any calls on BT least of all that I could do this by a 1280 prefix. So if I make 6 calls prefixing them with 1280 they would register with BT and I wouldn't be charged for the 1571 or caller id services?

Yes, make them calls of less than 60 minutes each to UK 01, 02 or 03 numbers at the weekend and they'll cost you nothing too (such calls are inclusive on BT's Unlimited Weekend Plan).

Tiscali is your default calls provider by a system known as Carrier PreSelection (CPS).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

The BT calls need to be chargeable to qualify for the 6 calls per quarter BT privacy thing....
