Advice needed

My wife has had a phone calL of the police stating someone has alleged she caused damage to another car in a public car park. She is adamant no such incident took place, also her sister was in another car with her and says nothing whatsoever occured.I have checked our car(white) & there is no marks on it whatsoever. We have had a form come through the post which is basically a confirmation of ownership form, though it does state a alleged incident of damage to another car took place & this form may be used in court. There is a contact number for the officer who is dealing with this, how do i/we proceed with this?.Any advice would be appreciated.

If it's happened in a public place i think the first thing i would do is try to find out if there is any CCTV footage, This should prove one way or the other if the incident took place.

If there is no footage available then it is pretty much the other persons word against yours in which case i would be very doubtful if the police tried to prosecute.

I might just have a suspicious mind, but this sounds incredibly suspicious.

-Was it really a policeman that phoned your wife? Doesn't sound like their normal procedure in this type of incident.
-This "ownership confirmation form" - is the return address actually a police station/admin office?

I would not fill in any forms, or give out any details until you have confirmed that you are actually dealing with the police. It just doesn't sound like the sort of incident they would have the resources to spend time on - particularly as we are talking about an "alleged incident" not on the highway.

    CAUTION ADVISED.
    I know nothing - really!!

Yes it was definately a policeman,my wifes just phoned the station concerned & he is not on duty today.I am puzzled because there is no marks on our car so how there can be "damage" on the other car is beyond me.They are now saying they will send a "local" out to have a look at our car,we could have done without this at this time of year its stressfull enough!.

Simply follow the instructions from the Police, but explaining FULLY that you have no recolection of any such incident.

    You'll probably hear no more.

    Fingers crossed!!

Please try to get as many witnesses, CCTV as you can. My dad had exactly the same problem years ago. Unfortunately he was taken to court and charged and ended up with penalty points and a fine. This also caused problems for many years with insurance.

To this day he is adamant that he did not do it and he has never been one to lie or try to get out of things. Unfortunately he had no-one with him so hopefully it will be better for your wife as at least her sister was there.
