Leaking windows

Hi, can anyone shed any light on this for me?
My mum has a leak in her upstairs landing window. It only leaks when it rains alot and the wind is blowing in that direction.
The water isn't actually coming in the window though, more through the wall above the window.
Someone has mentioned window lintels but she doesn't want to ask a builder about this cos she thinks they will say they need doing even if they don't!!
Dad mentioned painting some waterproofing stuff on the bricks outside, but again not sure if this is the right thing to do?
Anyone had anything similar, or know what it could be?

Is there a gutter above this window? If yes the first thing I would do is check that the gutter is not overflowing and if it is to clear it out.0

Is the mastic pointing around the window frame still in tact? If not, providing there is access to the outside, its a quick and simple job to do. I can't see why it would be coming in through the wall, so that would definitely be the first place id look
Good luckSome people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!0 -
almost certainly just the sealant around the window frame. simple enough job.Get some gorm.0
