does custard freeze?

Recently I read a thread here about things in other peoples trolleys and I felt myself blush because I had just bought some of those small custard pots. See OH won't eat custard and its not worth making it just for me but if I could freeze it, I could "batch" make it and then people would stop feeling sorry for me when they check out my trolley!!

Could you not buy it in a tin?

Nowhere near as cheap, but good to keep 'in stock'.

Why not buy custard powder and just make up enough just for you. Thats what I do.

Yes it does freeze! Needs a good stir or whisk when it's defrosted. I never make the right amount, there's either way to much or everyone wants second and third helpings, so judging how much will be required is next to impossible, I just freeze mine in old marg tubs or if it's a huge amount in lock n lock boxes.

  • Thanks mummysaver I'll try that. I saved the little custard pots so I'll make a batch and reuse them as they are just the amount I like.
I have tried the tins but I don't want custard day after day and I was throwing so much away.

I use Birds Instant (in a glass jar so you can mix as little or as much as you want). As far as custard goes it's OK. For some reason Sainsbury's only sell the packets but Tesco do sell the jar. they even have a "light" version if you are so inclined!

I make my own, just adjust the quantities if there's only me eating it.

Yes, I do this too - I use a bit of cornstarch in the mixture when I first make it, so it stabilizes better, and whizz it with the stick blender after reheating to restore the texture to the original. No problem whatsoever. It is still much nicer than custard made with custard powder.

  • Im sure the answer to this is "no you cant!" but I opened a tin of custard yesterday for pudding that OH then decided he didnt want. there is about two thirds of a tin left that I wouldnt eat till at least monday (out tonight and tomorrow) ...firstly I guess will it keep that long?
secondly , is there anything else I can do with it other than trying to give it away to some poor unsuspecting soul who might fancy a pudding in front of x factor tonight (thats usually me!) ...(any takers pls send an SAE :rotfl:) .... I wondered if i could freeze it but it doesnt say you can and I dont want to kill anyone (or myself) the next time I wanted to use it
just hate wasting things - especially puddings which I would normally devour! :D

I have frozen some custard that I made up from a sachet (how very un MSE but it did come from app foods........). It has frozen very well however I have yet to defrost some and see if its ok. My logic was that you can buy frozen puds with custard either in them or with them so it should be ok........

    not much help sorry
