Replace Warm Air heating or put in Combi/Rads?

  • With costs side of the things - I have the money and do not mind purchasing what I also feel is a "better"system in the Combi/Rad for around £5k.

But along with this is the extra costs - like redecorating the whole house. With the grills removed this will be needed, plus the living room which houses the "johnson + starley" I will need extensive decorating and replace the flooring for the living room.

Maybe I need to have a think indoors and plan whether the extra space will be a great benefit, before trying to pick 1 of the 2 systems?

Hi...in our part of Kent there are at least a dozen RGIs who do warm air (my OH isn't one of them;) ). Try the 'Find an Installer' facility on the CORGI website . Get a few quotes once you decide a course of action and go from there.

For the last couple of years we have had to use an Immersion Heater for the Hot Water tank, as hot water part of the Johnson + Starley needs replacing. I was told it is not feasilble to replace just that, I might as well do the lot.

Had the similar problem a couple of years ago, had to use the immersion for a couple of weeks, thats how long it took the service guys to turn up with a spare part!
Suggest you really find a dependable help near you.
they circulate dust around the house, they definitely need annual servicing and (worst case) if they go fatally wrong they will pump CO to every room in the house and kill the lot of you - whereas a faulty gas fire is more likely to take out one or two people.

Well I wont sleep soundly tonight :rotfl:
Never had that much problem with dust , but must admit the pipes were 'cleaned'
    when Buncefield blew up.

If I had the choice?? a wet system is certainly easier to control , temp wise.
But the space saving is immense,
But choice between spending £12000 and ??? No contest.

A lot of RGIs make informed decisions about what they are comfortable working with.

I decided long ago not to continue with warm air units, not to install gas fires and never, ever to even think about installing flueless gas fires - there is no amount of money that would persuade me to do this.

I am also a lot happier removing open flued appliances rather than maintaining them.

I like everyone to sleep soundly at night, including me :D
