House Deeds

We've recently finished paying our mortgage with a well known building society and we have the choice of either having the deeds or leaving them with the BS free of charge under their "Deedcare" scheme. It seems more secure to leave them with the building society. It also means that the mortgage isn't closed off so that the option remains to take out further loans without new surveys etc. It is currently free, thus avoiding solicitor/bank fees for keeping the deeds but I suppose it could eventually be a charged for service. Has anyone used these kinds of service. Has anyone got a view regarding whether or not to use them? Thanks in advance.

  • It sounds like the Halifax.
If it is then it is free as long as you get your buildings insurance through them. That is unless something has been changed while I was not looking.

  • It's Alliance and Leicester. But is there any catch that anyone can see in leaving the deeds with them?

    A&L are a bank!

But anyway, if the service is free there's no reason not to go for it - it keeps the deeds safe.

If they implement a charge in future, they will presumably give you notice and you can choose then to have the deeds out of their care and look after them elsewhere.
