Recommendation for winter sun 'convalesecence'

Hi everyone,

My partner is currently recovering from surgery and will be off work for a couple more months.

We're thinking of taking a break in January for a winter sun break. Any thoughts? We're considering Gran Canaria (where we've been before, to Puerto Mogan) or Lanzarote, maybe another island? Or somewhere else maybe?

Ideally, direct flight from Manchester, not more than 4 or so hours.

All suggestions gratefully received!

  • Make sure you stay within Europe because of the healthcare implications. Check that there's a decent hospital wherever you decide to stay.
  • we are going to paphos in Jan , is that any good for you as should have a few hours of sun though not as hot as the canary isles.

He is healing well at the moment and we wouldn't be going unless he gets the all clear from the doctors, so we're hoping he's not going to be in need of hospital care. But obviously insurance could be a problem so we think the EU would be the best bet.

We like the idea of the Canaries because it is a lot warmer than the Med in January. But what about Madeira, for instance, as an alternative? I know people do go to the Med in winter too, but are the temperatures warm enough, especially as he feels the cold at the moment?

Perhaps wait until Feb/Mar when it is warmer

We're thinking of January because that will be just before he is planned to go back to work. It's a kind of sunshine boost before facing work in dark and gloomy Britain, if you see what I mean.

And we're hoping that he will be mobile again so hills shouldn't be too much of a problem. Apart from the surgery, he is pretty well in himself and isn't going to be an 'invalid'.

    So options so far:

Canaries (thinking especially of Gran Canaria or Lanzarote), Madeira, or the Med (maybe Malta?).

If it was March we would have considered Sicily but January will be cold.

    Any more thoughts?

Cyprus is likely to be warmer than Malta and you can use the EHIC there as long as you're staying in the (Greek) South.
  • We really like Malta but must tell you it's raining there at the moment although it's warm rain

If you can make it cheaper do so. If it's not reduced, in Primark, off ebay or free I can't have it

My DD has just returned form Bluebay Palace in Corralejo in Fuerterventura. Fab hotel, good service in a quite area but with a few bars and restaurants close by. check it out on tripadvisor. You can sometimes get a late deal on line with First Choice lates. There are lots on the site at the moment with flights from Manchester. Its worth a look.
