I bought a pack of 50 TDK 1-8x 4.7GB DVD-R
I also bought a Lite-On External SOHW-1673SX DVD +/-RW .
When I try and burn a dvd, the set-up etc is fine ... using Nero whatsitmajig! But, the PC keeps freezing during the burn process! Got a bit peeved 'cos I went through quite a few DVD's, then used a re-write one, seemed to be going well, so popped out to the shop (am really tired now!) and when I got home, it had frozen again!
Anyone know why this is happening? I checked the Lite-On site and it says you need 9gig free space, I got 32gig free space ... and the rest of the stuff, well, I haven't got a clue!
I did managed to burn one DVD, the first one - to test the DVD writer out, that worked fine and now it's not working, it's driving me nuts!
Can some one help me please?

Hi
Is your pc an old old, what spec is it? are your ports usb1 or usb2. I can only think that perhaps the external drive is using to much power from your computer, have you tried closing down all running programs, and burning.

I'm almost sure it is a USB2, 'cos the DVD writer did work the first time I tried ..... comp isn't exactly a spring chicken though!
what kind of power could it be using too much of? I don't get that bitCould it be memory? If I delete some stuff of the HD ... could that help free up some memory too?

Hi
The power would come off your motherboard, it could be drawing to much. If you go into System, Hardware and then into Device Manager, you will see a list of all the hardware in your computer. Open the USB controller, right click the USB Root Hub and you should see the DVD Driver on one of them, and the power its using. This happened to me but it was a Touchspeed modem, and it use to make my pc crash and reboot, my motherboard just couldn't handle the power of the usb modem, which was 500ma. If I was you I would try to burn a CD and see what happens. Deleting stuff off your hd will not give you more memory, programs that are running take memory, so make sure no programs are running. How much memory do you have? Of course it could just be a faulty drive, but we have no way of telling that, unless you can plug it into another computer to check it.
Sorry I can't be more helpful
Hope this helps

Thanks again .... tried looking on the USB Root Hub thingy and I couldn't see it listed! But it should be there right? Nero recognises it!
Will try again and see how it goes .... how do I check how much memory I have? I turned off some programs using the Task Manager ... I never know which ones are ok to turn of and which ones are not! Is there a way of telling? Most of them have weird names anyway and I have no idea what they are for!
Thank you so much for your help too! Hope you have a Wonderful Christmas and a Peaceful and Prosperous New Year !

It's almost certainly an inadequate power supply problem. Rather than buy and fit a new psu, one simple and cheaper solution is to buy an external, powered USB hub such as the 6th item down on this website.
This has its own independant AC adaptor so it wont draw power from your mobo.

If you go to System, Under General, it will tell you what Processor and how much memory you have.0
