hiya, I was just wondering if Egg have got back to you on this? Thanks
Sorry Lychee, I said "I'd", ie I would if I was you.

I haven't got the 6.55% (as was) account...only the 6.30% fix...didn't see the point when it was obvious rates would be tumbling (and I already had 5 or 6 accounts paying 6.5%).
  • I recently opened a internet savings account paying 6.55%. I believe the rate is variable. Online I cannot see the rate earned. I note that the rate on new accounts is 4.5%. I assume my account rate has been cut to that rate as the account was variable rate. The best fixed rate is from A&L 6.3% on 2nd issue web saver. Halifax Guaranteed reward with conditions 6% and 3 month fixed from Halifax 6.5%.

Your account has dropped to 5.05%. In fact all Egg accounts have taken the full 1.5% cut apart from the fixed 6.3% account.

However, this afternoon the rates given on the website are still that (for accounts opened between 11 October 2008 - 7 November 2008) annual interest is at "6.55% gross pa/AER (variable) for first twelve months (includes 12 month variable bonus rate of 1.80% gross pa from the date the account is opened)". That is, though it gives the variability note it does not say that it has been varied as yet.

I'm not sure where you're seeing that so maybe you need to clear the cache on your browser. All the new rates published a couple of days ago are here:
