Contents Insurance and BR

Does anyone know why & how being BR affects your contents insurance? I have just done a comparison search and one of the assumptions was that you werent BR. This was after I tried to renew my annual contents insurance and realised it was an assumption I werent on the renewal so I told them and they are getting back to me. Does your premium go up? or can they refuse you? I cant see what the problem is and I dont like the fact that it was lumped in with declaring criminal convictions...does anyone know what the deal is?

Hell I was not even asked and did my own (never had none) 3 weeks before BR as people here advised I needed it.. better look at the policy.. that wont amuse me none if there is a clause in it, I will cancel it and put it in my mothers name then as she lives here with me! ouch... you never know what it effect it may have, but hey I am still pleased to say I am free of phone calls, letters threats of baliffs which worried the hell out of my 74 year old mum, so if I have to pay more so be it!
BUT why would that be, cos we are not considered trustworthy, what a sham some of us ended up this way thru little fault of our own, my ex just walked out and left me with 55k of debt, nice one mate.. hope they catch up with the swine for the only loan in joint names... that would make me SMILESome Days are Diamonds Some Days are Stones,Sometimes the hard times won't leave meBSC 162:beer:Banktupt 22 Oct 2008 at 10am!0 -
there was no clause in mine, to inform them of bankruptcy in the fine print, so i merely said eff all.

I'm not sure of the answer but I had a fire in the house about a year before my bankruptcy and when I was on the phone to the insurer (incidentally I had only just taken out cover 3 months before!!) I was asked if anyone in the household was bankrupt. I don't know what their reply would have been had I said yes because I wasn't thinking about BR at that time.
There is a thread on here about BR friendly insurers. If I can find it I'll provide a link (or maybe someone else will be able to??).

I just tried to unsuccessfully to provide the link. The thread is called
'BR friendly insurance companies' posted by hjsmum on 25/07/08. You can do an advanced search for it by typing in BR friendly insurance companies and it should come up.
Phil says he was okay with More Than. They were the ones I was insured with who asked if anyone in our household was BR but like I said, I don't know what they would have said had I answered yes.
It is better to be honest instead of trying to hide it because if you do ever need a payout you want to make sure you're covered or not waste your money on premiums!
If you find a BR friendly one maybe you could add it to that post.

I am looking at the co-op for insurance. Their assumptions do not include BR and I have checked their policy/terms documents - no sign of the B word. Have not spoken to them yet though.
I was with More Than, who again, there was nothing about bankruptcy or insolvency in their policy/terms documents so I didn't mention it.0 -
I did a search on one of the companies that search through loads of different insurance comps and got a long list of companies willing to offer me insurance but also a long list of those who wouldn't due to my 'have you ever been BR' status. Thats the bit that really winds me up, the have you ever part, because that means its hanging over your head for the rest of your life.0

Thanks for that everyone. I did a search last night and I came across a forum that referred to the company I have got my contents insurance with and who have the clause - AA - apparently they should be okay with it so long as I pay up front (as paying via instalments is form of credit apparently but i expected this). However I shall be speaking to them tomorrow so shall let you know if they turn out to be BR friendly or not. If not I shall try the others mentioned on the link as its up tomorrow so I want to get covered! I cant wait to renew my car insurance, hope thats just as fun *urgh*0

Okay so yes it is credit to pay monthly but surely it is the person on the other end of the phone who should ask when you apply over the phone? I renewed my car insurance but I phoned and said HEY why has it gone up, they gave me a better deal, and I did my contents insurance with them, but no mention was made about BR. So will get the policies out and check them, as god forbid I had an accident and found I was not covered in my car that would be dreadful.
