Please help!

Hi,

I am not sure if I am posting this on the correct forum site, so if not please feel free to move.

My OH has very bad credit history - however I want him to get a current account so he can pay the bills and half the rent. He has just told me that he has asked every bank (not sure if that is true!!!!) Does anyone know of a bank that will consider opening a current account in this situation. Any help or if anyone is in a similar situation I would appreciate advice please.

Thanks

  • he should be able to get a basic account with all the above but no cheque book or od without being credit checked all banks offer these some with debit cards some cash cards only
  • Apparently he has told me he has been to Nationwide, Barclays and Natwest and none will offer him a current account because he used to have a current account with Nationwide and didnt pay bills and then charges went on the account and the account was closed and he has defaults against his name.
  • I am in the same situation well I can't get any type of current account I have however been able to get a basic account with abbey nation. It is really rubbish but you can have direct debits paid from it same as standing orders and get your wages or state benefits paid into the account. You can only use the card at cash points to withdraw cash so on that side of it it's rubbish. Having a basic account and if he is able to manage it well then in about 9months -1year they may allow him to upgrade
  • Thanks for the advice Tasha. Did you get that in the branch or via the net? Do they do a credit check on you do you know?

I'm not sure if this helps but Abbey now do a instant plus account ask in branch. They used to do this a while ago, but there have brought it back, it won't give you a cheque book etc straight away, but if it still the same as before, give them 6 months of credits going in and not going overdrawn and DD not returned they will upgrade you to a normal current account. Other than that try yorkshire, i haven't got brilliant credit and i got a current account there not a basic account.
PS i forgot you get a visa electron with this abbey account.
  • I went into the bank they basically told me that its very easy to do. What they did is sold me contents insurance in order to get the account then Within 2 days I cancelled it and had a basic account that is what the advisor told me to do. So i didnt have to pay anything towards the contents insurance. If he goes into the branch most of the staff are nice. They do a credit check but it doesnt really matter as its a basic account with no overdraft they cant lose
  • I might persuade him to give it a go - he will probably telll me it is not worth it because he is sure he will get turned down everywhere. But I am fed up with all the rent coming out of my name and the bills not getting paid!! Thanks for all your help much appreciated.

You can apply for this on-line. just apply for the normal account then tick the box for instant plus this means if you get declined for the normal bank account they will open a instant plus account. go to http://www.abbey.com/csgs/Satellite?c=GSProducto&cid=1127562791480&pagename=Abbey%2FGSProducto%2FGS_InfProducto
  • Try Coop - They have a basic account & accept people with poor credit history.
