Well ive got more than the limit in HBOS Some tied up for a year. Working abroad at the present so not very handy in trying to move about into new accounts. So riding the storm. But got some contingency plans to move to families accounts if anything which I think is unlikely happens.

    Indeed!

as i said i have absolutely NO concerns about this whatsoever, but it needed to be mentioned precisely because of people like eeja hovering around these boards like a bad smell :)

but i also agree that it would be unthinkable of the Eurozone to allow such an important bank as Santander to get into trouble,

Excuse me Sir, aren't you the guy who said earlier this year that Bradford and Bingley were as safe as houses ...or was that someone else ?
  • I moved £50K from HBOS to Abbey (via Kaupthingedge for two weeks). I still have a sizeable chunk in HBOS but am confident about it now it is semi nationalzed! I don't want to bank outside the UK - I am unsure if the compensation schmes of some of these smaller countries (eg Ireland) would pay out to overseas depositors.

    Hmmm... not me, Sir
i have never, ever, used that particular term in regards to anyone :)

Between the time NR failed and B&B went bust, i didn't make any posts!

i only commented on B&B's position long AFTER their present situ

Don't panic Mr Mainwaring. I'd be surprised if there were not another problem with a UK bank. But if the UK government can bail out uk savers with the foreign bank Icesave, they are hardly likely to let a uk bank go to the wall and watch as uk savers lose their deposits is he? think about it. That would be political suicide.

  • Thinking of puting £100K into Saga fixed 1yr (joint).

why is everybody so confident that governments will continue to be able to bail out failing banks?

(not a loaded question, or attempt to scaremonger - - just genuinley would like to know the answer)

There would be absolutely anarchy if a large UK bank holding millions of personal depositors accounts was to fail and not be bailed out by the government. If that happened suddenly money wouldn't be very important! There would be rioting, an uprising and all sorts of unimaginable consequences.

They have set a precedent with NR, B+B etc, and as earlier mentioned by Stavros with the Icelandic banks

The 50K FSCS limit is just a notional limit IMO when not in times of crisis.

If you are putting more than 50K in savings accounts above the FSCS guarantee who do trust ????????

Only Northern Rock and NS&I. Why would you need to do this, anyway?
    .
  • I have a question. The government is increasing the amount its borrowing, yet NS&I is reducing its rates on purpose to deter people from transferring more funds.

Wouldn't it make sense to leave the rates as semi-reasonable so that the government wouldn't have to borrow its way through everything?

That's the traditional Labour policy of old, borrow and spend as much as you can. History repeats itself over and over again.
