Quick credit card booking insurance question!

Hiya,

Does anyone know - if I book a holiday and pay the DEPOSIT on a debit card, and then BALANCE on a credit card, will it be covered by the insurance you get when making purchases on credit cards?

Thanks for you advice!

I believe as long as you have paid £100 towards your holiday with your credit card then you are completely covered for the whole cost. Why not use the credit card for the deposit?
If you have nothing constructive to say just move along.

I would use the CC for the deposit - but I am waiting for a new one which hasn't come yet, and we don't have enough credit on our current (0% on purchases one). I made a payment on it, so there would be enough, but it hasn't been coverewd by the Halifax 'faster payments' scheme (although it's paying a Halifax card from a Halifax account - !!!!!!?!?) so will take 3 days - and I don't want to lose the holiday as it is a good deal!

I agree with the above advice: once you have made a payment of at least a hundred pounds by credit card, you will be protected under the consumer credit act. If you pay the deposit by a different method, I suggest that you make the hundred pound credit card payment as soon as is convenient.

Note that this is not the same as travel insurance, and would not help you if anything like a medical problem or redundancy meant that you needed to change your travel plans. I strongly advise you to arrange travel insurance as soon as you have made the first payment for your holiday (the deposit).
  • Thanks Voyager.

We have an annual travel insurance policy which comes with our bank account, but I don't know how we would stand on that if the company went out of business or something.
We have claimed on it before when DH's father died and we had to cancel a foreign package holiday, but this is a canal-boat holiday in the UK and we are booking it and paying the company, but there are 8 people going on it, so I'm not sure how we stand re cover on our 'bank' policy.
As it is with a small company I am a bit more worried about something happening to them than if I was booking with a travel firm which was ABTA/ATOL! Shame we have to consider this, but in the present financial climate.........
