Claiming backdated working tax credits

I'm self employed and have just started claiming working tax credits, when I made the claim I was under the impression that my tax credits would be automatically back dated by the 3 months previous that I was also eligible for. However this doesn't appear to be what has happened.

The HMRC website says that claims will be automatically backdated if you're responsible for children or if you've come off benefits. Neither of these apply to me. It doesn't state that these are the only circumstances where tax credits can be backdated though, so do I just need to ask to get it backdated?

Comments

  • Call up the helpline and request 93 days backdating.

As long as your circumstances have been the same for the last 93 days (3 months) there normally isn't a problem with the backdating being applied.
